Stephen Fry has branded Sir Keir Starmer’s first 100 days as Prime Minister as ‘disastrous’ in a withering verdict of the new Labour Government’s perfomance. The actor, who expressed his support for Sir Keir prior to the general election, admitted Labour are in a ‘mess’ after little more than three months in power. He added it was ‘extraordinary’ how badly the PM had begun his spell in No10, as he bemoaned ‘infighting’ at the top of Government.Sir Keir’s rocky start as premier has included a furious row over his acceptance of lavish gifts and widespread anger at Labour’s axing of pensioners’ winter fuel payments. The PM has also been forced to ditch his chief of staff, Sue Gray, and undertake a Downing Street ‘reset’ amid claims of a bitter civil war among his senior staff. Stephen Fry has branded Sir Keir Starmer ‘s first 100 days as Prime Minister as ‘disastrous’ in a withering verdict of the new Labour Government’s perfomance The actor, who expressed his support for Sir Keir prior to the general election, admitted Labour are in a ‘mess’ after little more than three months in powerFry was among a number of high-profile celebrities to offer their backing to Sir Keir before the general election on 4 July. But, asked what he thought about Labour’s first 100 days in office he told LBC radio: ‘Disastrous, disastrous.’I mean, it does seem extraordinary, doesn’t it, because you think you’re in opposition, you’ve got a bit of time to get things together.’You’re not sure when an election would be called. It was slightly earlier than anybody imagined, as we know, the famous rain swept scenes in Downing Street. ‘But the one thing you do is you say, ‘Look at what happened. Look at what happened with Boris [Johnson] and everyone else, the Spads, the special advisers, the civil service, Dominic Cummings, all these people. Look at the infighting’.’Look at even with the previous Labour governments. Look at the bad blood between [Tony] Blair and [Gordon] Brown towards the end and so on.’Let’s make sure the first thing we do, even before policy is process. That’s what Blair always used to say. And so, let’s make the process clear and transparent and honest and friendly and efficient.’And instead, they do the opposite. I mean, what is it? Is it just plain human susceptibility to whatever it is that power does to people?’He added: ‘It is a mystery that they could have allowed themselves to get into this mess.’Fry has previously been an active Labour supporter and considered becoming a Labour MP in the 1990s.Before this year’s general election, he branded the Tories a ‘busted flush’ and praised Sir Keir for being ‘slightly more ordinary and boring’ than other politicians. In his LBC interview, Fry also spoke about his decision to gain Austrian citizenship earlier this year. ‘My grandmother was Austrian and it’s partly a finger up to Brexit,’ he added. ‘Obviously, to have a Schengen group passport is a good thing.’
