A father claims his family were forced to flee the ‘worst holiday park ever’ after just one night when they found bed stains and bugs in their room.Richard and Lindsay Brown had booked a three-night stay at Cowden Holiday Park in Yorkshire with their four daughters for the cut price of just £195.It was to be their first family trip away with their three-month old baby, but they claim the conditions at the site, which is near Hull, left them no choice but to curtail their holiday early.Richard said an unsafe playground which left his 11-year-old daughter injured and having to walk for ’20 minutes down 50mph roads’ to reach the beach ruined their experience. The 35-year-old claims that when he posted the videos detailing their time there he was then ‘bullied’ online by friends of the holiday park who accused him of lying and sent abusive messages.Cowden Holiday Park claims the family have ‘grossly misrepresented the circumstances of their stay’ and that there are ‘rigorous’ checks in place to ensure conditions are clean. It added that the family had received a full refund and the ‘majority of customers enjoy their experience of staying with us’, while it has received a number of five star reviews online. Richard Brown claims his family was forced to leave a British holiday park early due to the horrible conditions they encountered. Pictured: Richard Brown with his wife Lindsay and their daughters Aurora (second left), Rose (third left) and Isabelle (first right) The father-of-four claimed to have found mysterious brown stains on the bedding in their caravan He also shared video showing bugs crawling around the room they had been given at Cowden Holiday ParkRichard had shared a scathing review of his stay on TikTok days after leaving the holiday park, in which he bemoaned the conditions his family found on arriving there in July.He shared footage showing, bemoaning wobbly bits of wood on the steps, a hole in the ground that he said his children could hurt themselves in and brown stains on the bed that he claims he found.Richard’s review of the park remains on Instagram and is captioned ‘this is honestly the worst park we’ve stayed at and we’re easily pleased’.The video features the photos advertised online before showing the caravan filled with bugs and bedsheets with mysterious brown stains on them.Richard, who lives in Newcastle, Tyne and Wear, said: ‘It was the worst holiday park I’ve ever stayed in. It was the holiday park from hell.’It was our first ever family holiday with our baby and it was spoiled by the experience. When you’ve got a newborn baby you’re just hoping everything’s clean and safe for them.’The beds and the cleanliness of the place kind of spoiled it. It looked like skid marks on the bed sheets. It could’ve been someone’s makeup. It was brown. We didn’t investigate it that far.’We were expecting to go to a holiday park and let the kids run free. We weren’t able to because it was in a pub car park. It was just next to a bunch of people smoking and drinking outside.’There were pictures [online] of families playing on the beach so I assumed there was a beach nearby. He shared video of what he said was an unsafe playground that had ‘sharp little clips’ in a crawling tunnel Richard said his 11-year-old daughter Isabelle was injured after scraping her back in the playground He also shared footage of an open drain which he says could have tripped his children’When we got there it was along a 50 mph country road. I was like ‘there’s no way’. We started walking there and went back to the car. I was with five kids and an elderly pensioner.’My daughter [11-year-old Isabelle Brown] scraped her back on [the playground] really bad. There were sharp little clips on it as she was crawling through the tunnel.’Not all holiday parks are great. Our expectations were low. We just want somewhere clean and got enough beds for everyone to sleep in. That’s what we’ll be happy with.’After leaving the caravan park the very next day, the father-of-four posted a review of the holiday to social media that went viral on TikTok.However, he claimed it was taken down and banned at around 400,000 views for ‘nudity and sexual activity involving minors’ and was repeatedly reported each time he re-posted it.He blames allies of the caravan park for reporting the clip as he was then bombarded with abusive messages from them.Richard, who was also away with wife Lindsay Brown, 33, and mum Michelle Brown, 57, as well as a nephew, said: ‘It was just ridiculous.’I think they were report-bombing us where their friends report the video because on TikTok it was taken down first. They were banned on several platforms.’They reported me for nudity so I had to take it down because for two seconds in the video I showed a picture of my daughter’s back where she got hurt.’I re-uploaded it after cutting out that bit. Then it was reported for harassment and bullying, you name it. In the last one I got reported for weapons. Richard also claimed to have found wobbly decking just outside their caravan The father-of-four posted a video of his experience online after they left the holiday park. Pictured: Richard with his daughters Isabelle (first left), Rose (second left) and Aurora (second right) and his mother Michelle Brown (centre)’They tried everything to take down the videos. My videos were getting banned left right and centre on TikTok. Because I refused to take it down they thought they’d take it into their own hands and report all my videos.’I don’t know how it’s still on Instagram. I was a bit gutted about it because I make money from the platform as well. It was just ridiculous.’The parent claimed a member of holiday park staff tried to entice him into removing the video by refusing to issue him a full refund otherwise. However, after the 35-year-old refused to compromise his ‘morals’ he was messaged by a family member on Instagram.Richard said: ‘They rang me up and basically said to me ‘if you don’t take the video down you won’t get a refund’.’I was not willing to compromise with that. You can’t just force me to take it down. It’s only a few hundred quid. I’m not going to compromise my own morals just to go along with it.’They tried to say on the phone ‘why didn’t you let us know about it’. We didn’t have a choice. By the time we unloaded our car and put all our stuff in and I started to notice things one after the other the reception was shut.’After the second phone call we did eventually receive a refund.’Later that day they rang me up and said they’d give me the refund but that they don’t want me to make any more videos because they don’t want any more exposure.’I said ‘fair enough’. Then I received messages from [an associate of theirs]. As far as I’m concerned, that agreement goes out the window now.’It was online bullying. That was the final straw for me. I was gobsmacked. Totally unprofessional.’The content creator, who first started reviewing holiday parks four years ago, revealed that he hadn’t intended to leave a bad review but that it wasn’t his ‘responsibility’ to make it a positive experience.Richard said: ‘I had intended for it to be a positive review. I didn’t expect it to be that way. I had the woman on the phone say to me ‘we’re a small family business’.’I did feel bad for her in that regard but at the same time it wasn’t my responsibility for there to be clean bed linen.’We’re paying a price and it was up to them that they didn’t make the holiday turn out that way. That was their responsibility, not ours. Richard says that after he posted the video he was ‘bullied’ online by allies of the holiday park who accused him of lying in his video Richard said one person accused him of posting ‘fake photos’ and releasing the reviews for his own benefit One person accused Richard of hurting a ‘family run business’ and being ‘the type to make a fuss of things’ In one message Richard claims he was accused of ‘spreading hate online”I’m just there to review it. It’s not up to me to make a good or bad review. It was how they intended for it to turn out.’I shouldn’t have to delete it just because it’s negative because that’s not on me. It wasn’t my responsibility to make the holiday a positive experience. That’s the responsibility of whoever’s providing it.’The dad admitted that despite it being a ‘cheap’ holiday that his mum bagged in a sale, it didn’t justify their poor experience.Richard said: ‘It was £200 but still to a lot of people that is a lot of money. And to my mum who is a pensioner that is a lot of money.’You can get some very cheap holidays that are really high quality. There’s no way the price is a justification for what was happening.’A Cowden Holiday Park spokesperson said: ‘The location is clearly stated on the website at the point of booking the holiday, along with the rest of the rental units.’Our bedding goes through rigorous checks with initially our laundry company who spot check for stains and secondly checked by our housekeeping company. The stains were not reported during either of these checks.’When the party checked out early, they were asked if everything was okay during their stay. We were told it was fine and no points were raised.’The description on the website states that the beach is a short walk from the park. This was fully explained to the customer at the point of check in; access to the beach takes approximately a minute’s drive in the car.’The children’s playground is subject to checks from an external company who provides a health and safety report – API and ROSPA accredited.’We asked for the video to be removed from social media as we felt it was not a true reflection of customer’s experiences of our holiday park and we provided a full refund regardless.’Mr Brown continued to post viral videos and recorded staff without their knowing or consent.’We believe that this guest has grossly misrepresented the circumstances of their stay at the park, [his mother] received a full refund on 26/07/2024 and we understood that was the end of the matter.’The majority of our customers enjoy their experience of staying with us, leading to repeat custom and our many 5* reviews support this.’
