You can now buy a piece of post war British history as a 122-square-foot Cold War nuclear bunker goes up for sale near Dartmoor. The Royals Observer Corps nuclear bunker, which was built in the 1950s, is for sale at auction with a guide price pf $12,000. Located in the South Hams, the bunker sits on tip of a hill overlooking Ugborough village and has panoramic views of the surrounding countryside.But there’s a catch. The property can only be accessed through a 15 ft vertical shaft using a tarnished ladder and has no windows. It does, however, have a chemical toilet, cupboards, shelves, and even a 70-year-old iron bunk bed. The sale is being handled by estate agent Luscombe Maye, which warns in its online description: ‘Given the unique nature of this lot, prospective purchasers must exercise extreme caution when viewing and view the property entirely at their own risk’. Its description also says that ‘on last inspection, the bunker itself has some water ingress and damage to the lid’.The bunker is currently owned by retired engineer David Cavendish, who decided to buy the site ‘on a whim’ for $5,000, according to The Telegraph.The bunker is one of around 1,500 built in the Cold War period as the population became increasingly anxious about other countries’ nuclear capabilities. It comes as a refurbished nuclear bunker went under the hammer for £15,000 last month. The 14ft underground bunker in Wormhill, near Buxton in Derbyshire, was built in the 1950s by the Royal Observer Corps (ROC) to save employees in case of an attack. . The site consists of a rectangular area of land being approximately 0.12 acres (440 square metres) of which the bunker itself lies to one side. In July another nuclear fallout shelter with stunning views of the Lake District sold for £48,000. The Cold War bunker in Dent, Cumbria, was built in 1958. Built close to the railway station and eight miles from Kirkby Lonsdale, the bunker boasts spectacular views of the Lake District National Park.The 40ft deep bunker, with a guide price between £15,000 to £20,000, was listed by SDL Property Auctions as a piece of post-war British history.But now it has sold for double the guide price after 65 different bidders fought for the property via internet, phone and proxy.There were also around 25 people who viewed the property before it was auctioned.
