An eccentric couple, who transformed their dilapidated hotel into a wonderland even Alice would envy, are raffling it off for only five pounds. When Gary and Dee bought the 1920s property in Skegness three years ago, they decided to take a stroll through the looking glass, and created Hatters Hotel. The pair bagged the property for £700,000 and then splashed out another £300,000, kitting it out with colourful Disney-themed décor. They have even featured on Channel 4’s Four in a Bed, where guests were blown away by their ‘mad’ fairy tale kingdom, which boast 29 bedrooms.  But after years of transforming the hotel to replicate Dee’s favourite fictional world, the couple wanted to sell the property in ‘fun and quirky way’ to match its character. Gary, 67, and Dee, 37, have decided to flog their  Alice in Wonderland-themed hotel in a raffle for only a fiver The couple bought the run-down property (Pictured left: Previously the Crown Hotel) back in 2021  for £700,000 (Pictured right: The Hatters Hotel)  The  pair decided to pump in another £300,000 into the hotel to create a wonderland even Alice herself would envy (Pictured)Despite having had a ‘cracking time’ at the family-run establishment, Gary, 67, and Dee, 37, have decided to flog the hotel amid a decline in tourism in the area.Gary said: ‘We thought raffling off the hotel would be a fun and quirky way to do it to match with the quirkiness of the hotel itself.’The opportunity is super. It’s a unique hotel and it is massive. We thought if we sold it by more traditional routes it could take us longer.’It has been rewarding owning it. We have had a cracking time. We used to have bands and entertainment, as well as weddings and birthday parties.’We also appeared on Four in a Bed, which wasn’t the best experience as the producers were just trying to constantly manufacture conflict.’But it was interesting nonetheless and was all publicity for us but unfortunately that has not been enough. The couple also hit the headlines in 2021 when they refused an ‘obscene’ amount of money, said to be £10,000 a week, from the Home Office to house asylum seekers.’In September 2021, we were asked if we would house 51 immigrants, however we turned this down. They were then moved into other hotels,’ he added. The couple decided to create their ‘mad’ fairy tale kingdom, also known as Hatters Hotel,  after being inspired by Dee’s favourite book by Lewis Carroll Despite having had a ‘cracking time’ at the family-run establishment, Gary, 67, and Dee, 37, have decided to flog the hotel amid a decline in tourism in the area (Pictured: A bedroom ) The Hatters Hotel also has several rooms dedicated to various characters from the iconic Disney film Among the characters awarded a room includes, the Cheshire Cat (Pictured), the Queen of Hearts, the White Rabbit and  Alice herself’We had a lot of support for that decision but also a lot of backlash too.’Since then, there has been a steady decline in tourism, so we decided to enter the hotel into a raffle and we’re looking to move away from the UK.’We need to sell 240,000 tickets to put the hotel up for the prize. That includes the hotel, stamp duty and legal fees.’If it doesn’t reach the target, we will have to rethink what to do but we hope there will be enough interest as its a rather quirky place.’The building was formerly the Crown Hotel, which closed down in the late 80s-early 90s, before the couple took over.Gary added: ‘We’ve put a lot of time and effort into this place. When we bought it, the place was very tired and needed quite a bit of work.’We’re both pretty handy so did a lot ourselves – the Alice in Wonderland theme was all Dee’s idea – it has been a million pound project.’Dee said previously: ‘I’m mad on Alice. I’m totally obsessed with her. I have always been a fan of Alice for as long as I can remember.’ The hotel also boasts, a bar, a restaurant a large function room, 29 bedrooms and a licence to hold weddings The raffle winner won’t only walk away with the £1 million – but will also bag half of the raffle sales (Pictured: The exterior of the property)The hotel even has a variety of room dedicated to the dedicating rooms to specific characters including the Queen of Hearts, the White Rabbit and AliceThe establishment has rooms dedicated to the Queen of Hearts, the White Rabbit, Alice and even has statues honouring The Mad Hatter, as well as Tweedledum and Tweedledee.More recently, the hotel was crowned ‘The Most Unique Hotel of 2024, with its large function room, sports bar, restaurant and licence to hold weddings. The winner of the raffle won’t only walk away with the quirky hotel, they will also nab half of the ticket raffle sales.
