The Disney+ adaptation of Jilly Cooper’s bonkbuster Rivals will take an ‘equal opportunities’ approach to nudity, according to the show’s executive producer. The streaming channel has promised to bring a ‘2020s lens’ to the 1980s classic – a notoriously politically incorrect tale of sex and scandal in the English social elite.  The story focuses on the tense rivalry between Rupert Campbell-Black (Alex Hassell) and Lord Tony Baddingham (David Tennant). The racy eight-part series is set to air from October 18 – but many viewers have been left wondering how its themes would be translated for a modern audience. In an interview with The Times, writer and executive producer Dominic Treadwell-Collins, who has previously worked on EastEnders, has shed light on the much anticipated new TV seres.  Disney+ promises that the racy eight-part series will be a ‘steamy’ adaptation of the 80s bonkbusterHe said: ‘We’ve been equal opportunities in our nudity. There’s a willy for every pair of t***.’He added: ‘Jilly comes across as fluffy and lovely – but she’s got a steely eye when it comes to the sexism, the homophobia, the racism, class.’ And according to Disney+, Rivals is a ‘joyously mischievous rollercoaster ride, steamy in its love stories and packed with larger-than-life characters.’ Poll Will YOU be watching the Disney+ adaptation of Rivals? The streaming service continues that it brings a ‘2020s lens to the 1980s’, offering a ‘raw exploration of a complicated moment in British history when class, race, sex, wealth, and sexual liberation meant that, for the very privileged few, there were no limits to what they could achieve’.In Jilly’s Rutshire Chronicles universe, marriages are largely of convenience, with wives accepting ‘boys will be boys’. Men are applauded for their caddish tendencies – while weight is referenced in a way that would not be acceptable to a modern audience. One wife proudly announces that she weighs seven stone and that anyone larger than a size six is fat. Another is referred to as ‘poor fat Sharon’. It also features powerful man approaching 40 hitching up with a young woman yet to turn 19. The cast includes Poldark heartthrob Aidan Turner, ex-Doctor Who David Tennant, Sex Education actress Bella Maclean and Alex Hassell, from BBC fantasy series His Dark Materials.  Aidan Turner has revealed viewers will be treated to a hilarious nod to his role as the shirtless Cornish hearthrob Ross Poldark, as he takes on one of his raciest roles yet in Rivals  Jilly Cooper’s Rivals has been adapted for the 21st century and is due to air on Disney+ next month (Jilly is pictured with Alex Hassell, Danny Dyer, David Tennant and Aidan Turner) Rivals focuses on the tense rivalry between Rupert Campbell-Black (Alex Hassell) and Lord Tony Baddingham (David Tennant)Based on Jilly’s 1985 novel Rivals, it sees two broadcasting titans going to war over a woman.  The book, part of the Rutshire Chronicles, soared to the top of the charts and sold more than a million copies. In March this year, the Mail’s Katie Hind revealed Jilly had fallen foul of cautious American TV executives, who ordered several intimate scenes to be reshot amid fears they are inappropriate in the post-Me Too age. A source said previously: ‘It was a very different world in the 1980s, when the book was written, so there were always going to be some issues in getting it right for today’s viewers.’However other insiders suggest a different reason for the reshoots – which are likely to delay the planned release later this year – claiming that the scenes were simply ‘not good enough to air’.Jilly told The Sun previously: ‘Every time you see women on the telly now they are so bossy and dominant. Men have to be much more submissive, which I think is a shame.’I like the sexes to cherish each other, to appreciate their good qualities. Men are a lovely sex and they ought to be strong and confident.’ Rivals writer and executive producer Dominic Treadwell-Collins previously worked on EastEnders for five yearsJilly also reminisced about a decision to ‘tone down’ the cover of her 1985 novel Riders in 2015. Before the edit, it had featured a man patting a woman’s behind.’I don’t know why they took the hand off the bum,’ the author said.’Political correctness is a bore, isn’t it?’And speaking to The Mirror in January, Jilly said she fears her novel wouldn’t be as well-received by modern-day audiences because they are ‘much more rigid and censorous.’She said: ‘They’re much more rigid – much more censorious. I don’t know about sex, you can’t say anything about anything. You daren’t.’Jilly herself has been offering advice on the script and acting as executive producer. It comes after Aidan Turner revealed viewers will be treated to a hilarious nod to his role as the shirtless Cornish heatthrob Ross Poldark, as he takes on one of his raciest roles yet in Jilly Cooper’s ‘bonkbuster’ Rivals. The 41-year-old actor took on the title role of Ross Poldark in the 2015 revival of the BBC series. He garnered a lot of attention thanks to his rippling physique being on display in many scenes of the period drama, cementing his status as a Hollywood hunk. And now, the star will be stripping down to the waist once again in his new Disney+ series Rivals. It’s too close [to Poldark].’ ‘But then they told me it’s in the original books – and it’s so funny. The first time I did that scene, people were laughing. It’s good to poke fun at these things.’Disney+ dropped the extravagant Rivals trailer in June – and it looks like there are plenty of racy scenes. Aidan’s character is married to Maud, played by fellow Irish actor Victoria Smurfit.
